Introduction

Once upon a time there was a pirat who was apassionate for the “Bays of Huatulco”. He returned several times, taking with him the most beautiful things he could find on his way. This pirate named Tomas Cavendish, left a fascinating history but, of course, he was never able to take along with him the beauty of “Bahias de Huatulco”. This mixture of the splendid Pacific Ocean and the beauty of 36 beaches located in nine bays of crystalline water and calm swell! A place where nature and the creation of mankind are in harmony.

Coffee cultivations, between mountains, cotton trees and orchids with the breeze of waterfalls and melodies of exotic birds... right there are the paths that are used with passion and hope for good harvest, paths where you can meet the astute look of a hiding deer, as well as a remote roaring of a jaguar. Those paths are inviting you to a magic walk to the coffee farms, where a table full of colours and flavours is waiting for you.

History

From studies of these regions, we know that the Mexicas arriving to this place called it “Cuahtolco”, what means “place where they adore the timber”. As the time passed by the word changed to its actual name “Huatulco”.

At the beginning of the Spanish domination, Huatulco was used as a commercial harbour provoking the strike of two pirates: Drake in 1578 and Tomas Cavendish in 1587. Even the treachery to Vicente Guerrero, the man who was the Mexican President before, took place at the beach “La Entrega”, place located in the bay of Santa Cruz.

In 1850, the governor of Oaxaca, Benito Juarez visited the pacific coast and funded “Villa de Crespo” which today is Huatulco.
 
In 1969, the Mexican government decided to support turism, specially places on the beach. They explored the national territory to find places to develop integral turist destinations. Flying over the pacific coast they found the fascinating bays of Huatulco with its calm, sandy beaches.

In 1983, when the highways Puerto Escondido-Salina Cruz and Oaxaca–Pochutla were finished, FONATUR started to work on the project “Bahias de Huatulco”. In those times most of the native people were living in Santa Cruz making their livings of agriculture and fishing.

As the development of Huatulco advanced, the place got famous at international level. The tourist infrastructure is excellent, so as the hotels, restaurants, bars, discos and golf club situated most of them in the bay of Santa Cruz, Tangolunda or in downtown La Crucecita.

It has also a good communication system and a modern airport, situated 19 km (11.80 miles) away from the hotel zone.

Bahias de Huatulco really converted to a magical paradise, where visitors can enjoy the beauty of nature.
